Skylight roofing as we know now has the same purposes as when it was first created— aesthetic and added functionality, although the functionality of skylight roofing differs now than it was before and these were most likely inspired by different cultures and traditions that adapted this type of architecture. In Ancient Rome, skylight roofing was simultaneously used as a visual experience and sundial to the people, allowing them to see the angles and intensity of the sun, depending on the time of the day. Today, skylight roofs are popular for their unique design features, with different types to accommodate various architectural designs and structures. Know about more of these below:
7 Types of Skylight Roofing

1. Fixed
Fixed skylights are immovable skylights either installed in flat or slanted roofs and are less expensive than vented skylights because it has a simple installation that does not require much machinations. This is the best option for anyone who wants natural light without the added functionality of ventilation. Our project in Miraya Gardens in Dasmarinas Cavite featured a fixed skylight which utilizes the use of natural light in enclosed spaces. In this setting, the skylight roofing serves as its focal point that directs your eyes upwards.

2. Vented
A vented skylight is much more flexible in style and function as it can be opened and closed either manually, electronically or by use of solar power. This is commonly seen in residential spaces to accommodate ventilation and aesthetics, that’s easy to navigate and functional to use. Compared to other types of roofing, this installation requires a thorough and professional workmanship, as this may cause leaks, condensation, and heat gain or loss, causing bigger expenses in the long run.

3. Pyramid
A pyramid skylight as suggested by its name is shaped like one. These are commonly found mounted on flat roofs, characterized by a square opening. This striking design is usually determined by the conditions of the existing elements in the roof, together with aesthetic requirements.

4. Double Hip
Double Hip skylight is the same as pyramid roof, except that it has a rectangle opening, as compared to a square opening of the pyramid’s. The result is a gable like structure, giving the home a unique and striking feature. This application is usually adapted by largely populated buildings like malls, hospitals and condominium units to give a unique detail and utilize artificial light in the morning. Our very own solid polycarbonate is featured in one of our projects in a Pasig condominium, depicting a double hip installation.

5. Barrel Vault
Barrel Vault is a grand, detailed type of skylight that covers a wide span arched structure, commonly used in shared and populated spaces. This creates a wider, open space, providing a well-lit area during the day and an aesthetic wonder at night. The use of Polylite’s polycarbonate sheets in Palazzo Verde is the perfect example of a barrel vault skylight. This striking place is an event venue that provides the guests an aesthetic spectacle.

6. Ridge
Ridge skylights have the same structure as double hip, positioned directly on the ridge, or the highest point of the roof. It is a long, narrow strip with two sloped sides. This angle brings maximum light into the room, therefore having a dual purpose of illuminating the space and enhancing the aesthetic appeal. This is one of the commonly used skylight designs because of its installation.

7. Tubular
Tubular skylight gives the least amount of incoming light because it diffuses the light before directly hitting the space. This skylight works by installing a tube-like tunnel from the roof to the ceiling level, making sure that the light is evenly diffused. Best used if you want a natural light without having to worry about making the space warmer. You can easily distinguish this type because atop is a small dome-shaped structure.
Polycarbonate is one of the most common materials used for skylight roofing because of its durable properties and aesthetic appeal. It offers great weather resistance, making your installation look good and new for a long time. If you are looking to buy polycarbonate sheets, search for any Polycarbonate branch nationwide.
